Lighting Solutions to Incorporate Into Your Landscape

Jeff Fleming

Whether you have a small or a large yard, landscaping is a crucial element to ensure that your property is attractive. However, when most people think of building supplies for their landscaping, they tend to focus flooring materials, cladding and more. As a result, lighting is an often-overlooked element, leading to homeowners simply installing light bulbs haphazardly. In reality, lighting is a prudent building supply for your landscape, as it will provide you with different functions. The following are some of the different lighting solutions that you can incorporate into your landscape:

Direct and indirect lighting

The main function of direct lighting is to illuminate specific parts of your landscaping. Thus, direct lighting can be used to draw the spotlight to garden features such as fountains, statues, a patch of blooming flowers and more. Direct lighting can also be used as task lighting outdoors, particularly if you have a grill or makeshift kitchen outside that you use when entertaining. Indirect lighting, on the other hand, functions to enhance the overall aesthetics of your landscape. As a result, indirect lighting is typically soft lighting that is primarily decorative, such as fairy lights, lanterns in trees and more. Your choice of indirect lighting is supposed to accentuate the overall appeal of your landscape without drawing too much attention away from it.

Path lighting

As the name implies, this type of lighting functions to illuminate the various walkways in your landscape. Path lighting will typically be in the form of freestanding fixtures that are installed in a row along the edging of your walkways. Path lighting is also great for driveways as it ensures the distance from your gate to the main house stays well illuminated during the night. When contemplating path lighting or your home, you should bear a few things in mind. First, you may want to invest in path lighting that comes with an automatic timer. This timer will save you the inconvenience of ensuring that you switch the path lights on and off on a daily basis. Secondly, you should consider voltage of the path lighting. The lower the voltage, the less the likelihood of your electricity bills increasing.

Security lighting

Another important lighting solution for your landscape is security lights. These types of lights have the primary function of deterring intruders from breaching your property by keeping your premises well lit. Nevertheless, it should be noted that security lights can be brilliant. Thus, instead of having them on throughout the night, you should invest in motion sensors that would activate the lights when activity is detected on your premises.
