Understanding the 4 Cs When Shopping for Diamond Engagement Rings

Jeff Fleming

For decades now, diamonds have served as the customary option for engagement rings. They are timeless, classic and have proven to be the most popular gems that can last for a long time. However, anyone can attest to the fact that choosing a diamond engagement ring is no minor feat. It's a complicated and time-consuming process you'll undertake before you find a ring that your loved one will cherish. This post shall discuss the four Cs of selecting the best diamond ring.

The Cut

One of the most crucial characteristics of the right kind of diamond ring is its cut. Cut affects the overall shine and scintillation of your diamond ring. If the cut is poor, your diamond appears dull and boring. You can quickly assess the cut of a brilliant round diamond since unbiased diamond labs professionally grade it. When choosing an engagement ring, it's wise to go for brilliant round diamonds that possess a good, ideal or super-ideal grade. High cuts help maximize your diamond ring's beauty for any carat weight.

The Colour

A diamond's colour and clarity are essential things to determine while choosing a diamond engagement ring. Different people have different abilities in determining the right diamond colour. However, most individuals prefer white or colourless diamonds whereas others may choose colours that are less detectable to untrained eyes. When shopping around for engagement diamond rings, consider F-H colour for the centre diamond.

The Carat Weight

A diamond's carat weight is commonly misinterpreted for size rather than its weight. During size comparison, always pay attention to a diamond's cut. Poorly cut high-carat diamonds seem smaller with deep cuts contrary to small-carat diamonds with impressive cuts. To choose the best diamond carat weight, always consider its carat and cut together. For the best value for your money, select carat weights that are slightly lower than half- or full-carat marks. For instance, you can buy a 1.9-carat weight instead of a 2.0-carat diamond.

The Clarity

You may consider the diamond's clarity as your last option since it has little effect on its appearance. For instance, grade S11 and S12 have visible inclusions, and you should watch out for this. Most people shopping around for engagement rings usually go for centre diamonds with VS2 and S11 clarity grades. Others who value clarity the most choose higher grades, such as IF and VVS.

Conclusion

Purchasing your diamond engagement ring can be somehow complicated when you don't understand the basics. Consider the above essential 4 Cs when shopping around for the best diamond engagement ring to get the best value for your money.
